European Population Conference 2008
The European Population Conference 2008 was organized by the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS) in collaboration with the Centre d' Estudis Demografics (CED) of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Various Spanish research organizations including the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the Universitat de Barcelona, the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica and the Universidad Nacional a Distancia joined as members of the National Organizing Committee in the organization of this conference which convened at the Alimara Hotel and Conference Center in Barcelona from 8-11 July 2008.
EPC2008 was a general scientific conference on population issues relevant to Europe which had as its main goal to provide insights into contemporary population trends in Europe as well as globally, their determinants and consequences as well as their policy implications. A special focus of the conference was on international migration and migrant issues which are an important topic on the European policy agenda. The latter was also stated in the opening address by the President of the European Commission mr José Manuel Barroso in a video message to the conference participants which was broadcasted at the Opening Ceremony.
The EPC2008 program comprised 100 simultaneous sessions and 3 poster sessions. From a record number of about 850 submissions for scientific contributions over 400 papers were presented and discussed during the simultaneous sessions, and over 250 posters during three separate poster sessions.
EPC2008 was attended by close to 700 participants from all over Europe and beyond including sizeable representations from North America and Australia. Some 20 per cent of participants came from outside Europe. Participation included some 150 students/young demographers.
